News, Updates & Memories

David Foreman passed beyond our horizon on 31 October following a most courageous battle with cancer, just two days before his 83 birthday.  He was born in Windsor, England and among many of his activities he was a Queen Scout and Baden Powell leader, stamp collector and soccer fan. Following many early travels David came to Vancouver, He was encouraged by his then roommate to join friends at the original Scottish Auditorium in Kitsilano. This was not only his introduction to Scottish Country Dancing but also to Elsie, his very beautiful wife to be. Elsie, from Glasgow, was an equally beautiful dancer having learned at school in Scotland.Together they were among the first members of our Gleneagles Scottish Country Dance Club.  David was an early Gleneagles chairman. David and Elsie and their three young boys moved to Asia in 1974 where they lived, and he worked, first in Singapore then Tokyo and then Hong Kong. They took part in many Scottish formal events and dancing in all three cities. While in Singapore, in support of his sons he started a small soccer club. On a later visit back to Singapore, after 40 years, he was thanked and praised by the Club for his initiative. There are now over one thousand young people playing. They maintained strong ties with West Vancouver, particularly their Scottish Country Dance friends. After fifteen years abroad they returned to West Vancouver life.  David and Elsie danced again with Gleneagles and they were part of the Gleneagles Demonstration Team. David served on the Board of the Vancouver Branch and helped coordinate and run the 2000 Centennial Ball for the Branch which was the first time a Scottish Band was brought to play in Vancouver. David enjoyed retirement and they did more traveling together. They remained living in West Vancouver where they have enjoyed their family of three sons and daughters-in-law and six grandchildren. Most sadly, their second son Bruce also succumbed to cancer last year. We are invited to gather with David’s family to celebrate his very fine life at 1:30pm on Monday 27 November in the West Vancouver United Church, 2062 Esquimalt Avenue in West Vancouver.
